--------------------------------------------------------------------------- To contact me, send me a message at youtube, my user name is "rofthorax". http://www.youtube.com/user/rofthorax (05/01/10 4:55 AM) I am having to shut down the server on friday nights because for some reason it just gets pounded (hit hard),which results in the server freezing up and the site fails, so.... Besides, nothing worse than being subjected to chann3lz on a friday night (* smile *) when you should be doing something else, like what I do, playing multiplayer games online, or such.. (04/12/10) Godaddy is really starting to piss me off.. I don't know if it is on my end or theirs, but I found the web server had slowly died since last night.. It was sustaining at around 62 processes a day ago, and last night it was at around 42 processes, and today 0.. It died.. I can probably write a script that will restart it when this happens.. I didn't think httpd performed so badly. (04/09/10) Fixed the server I think, so hopefully it won't come down for a while more.. Hopefully not ever.. But servers do get popular. Speaking of which.. Whoever the heck is puting up all that "DBSK" videos.. As with NSYNC, DBSK is no different. I'm tired as heck of both.. I'm a former NYC resident, so if you think this is cool, you have anotehrt thing coming. Also I ban by IP address, if you keep this up, I will ban your IP block, or worse, all of Japan, Korea, and well..i It's not cool. Contribute a few of yoru favorites but don't dominate the channel, or you will only be spectating.. BTW, I'm working on a player that hopefully will server the needs of those who just want to see videos of those they favor.. Chann3lz is about sharing, not dominating. If I see too much of one thing, I can trash it and if I see too much of one thing all over, I start banning ip's.. That doesn't mean you lose access to the site, it just means you can't contribute. (02/02/10) Well I bought another two years of virtual server hosting, so chann3lz will be up for two more years. It costs me about 300 a year. But if I outgrow it, say I get 20,000-30,000 people per hour, then I will have to get another server or something dedicated.. Maybe not.. I'd just figure out someway to distribute the load. Good thing I figured out my bottleneck was my ISP and not godaddy.. So I feel more confident now.. (01/28/10) I've determined that the problem is probably on my end.. And so I put the software back up.. Hopefully it will fix itself whatever it is. But the down side is I accidently wiped the main channel.. And I didn't back it up in the last couple of months, so everything is back the way it was in October.. Really sorry about that, but I mistaked the best stuff channel for the sessions database, and saw a cardinality of 9000 and thought that to be 9000 sessions, and I was looking at the wrong table. I erased it, then realized I was not looking at the sessions table.. But after my error I backedup the rest of the database.. However I replaced it all with what was there in october, so that really didn't help.. Man today was just shit. I'm going to go play some multiplayer game to take my mind off it.. Maybe I can plan what the next step will be. (01/28/10) The server load is crazy on chann3lz, I'm going to have to figure out a way to fix it, until then, I may add a feature to it that will force a delay until the number of forked apache processes returns to something normal. When I found it unable to do anything, the load was about 53 of those processes.. And it seems to do well at under 20.. That probably means about 20 people are hitting the server at once and apache (the web server) has to answer the requests of 20.. If I have 50 hitting the server at once, then the server gets hosed.. So I'm going to have to add in a feature that pops in a redirect with a random delay until the load drops below 20.. Sorry about this, but I guess chann3lz is too popular.. I'd like to find a way to load balance this.. I was thinking about using the mysql database servers on my cloud computing account, and see if I could distribute the load that way. I'm also reading about a way to use threads with Apache, with a MPM module, that may fix things.. (01/08/10) I figured out why on channels like the 70s and such, that the played count never seems to increase. This is my theory because I haven't investigated the code, but I think that when a random video code is selected, another query of the video code reveals that the video no longer exists, so chann3lz has to immediately find another video to substitute. You can verify this by running your mouse over the "bookmark this" link and comparing the code there with the one in the address bar.. If they are different, that means the code that was attempted was no longer available. I Think the new video is an attempt to replace the video or something, and it drops back the play count. Okay I really don't know why, but that's the theory. (11/30/09) I fixed it so that links to videos on chann3lz will show up in facebook correctly (as youtube links do). I also made a number of changes to the page, to reduce the clutter. (11/29/09) Chann3lz is going through changes as a result of a transition to the new Youtube API. The bookmarklets have been mostly updated to use no category in searches, so you are guaranteed results. The categories are bogus in the new youtube API, pretty much, so I may remove the categorization menu selector in the search page altogether. Searches are a bit slower, I don't know if it will get fixed. I reset at 100 videos left in the pool, instead of 0, cause near zero there seems to be an anomaly in the code that keeps it from ever really reseting. One day the server was hosed, so I'm trying to prevent that from occuring again. The HD support is superficial, the Youtube API contains nothing it in to permit me to tell if a video has HD content or not, but I can "wire on" the HD ability, so that's all the "[HD]" button does. The "[HQ]" button does the same thing, but wires on HQ mode, which is just a higher quality video format. Buttons [Lo][Med][Hi] just selection the quality setting of the flash player, the video content doesn't actually change. I'm working on a remote control feature that I hope will permit one to control chann3lz on a remote computer from another computer, so as to say skip a video without having to walk over and change the video, it also may permit multiple people to control the screen.. IT's a thought.. (* Reason for "Prolong End" *) It's to permit those who contribute videos to have a greater chance of seeing their videos, so they will contribute more, by keeping the pool short, that means there is a greater chance that they will see a video they just added. It also permits one to see newer videos the minute they are added to the pool, because as the pool nears completion (to be reset) the greater the chances of someone seeing a video that was just added. It's just the nature of the program. How it works, when you have "prolong end" on (golden orange), everytime you see a video, chann3lz takes a video from the "played" section and adds it back to the "unplayed" section. So there is a greater chance you will see a video you had already seen, but it's necessary to prolong completion. (8/8/09) I traced two ip's coming from India, while this could be a legitimate user, the user added hundreds of videos in a matter of seconds, this could be a spider (search engines use these to create search vectors, when a search engine crawls my site it comes out that videos from one channel get added to the best stuff channel). So I banned this user, but contact me if I was mistaken. There was a crawler from Japan, so I banned that one outright. I reverted the japan crawlers submissions, I also reverted part of the submissions of the india user, but kept the ones that looked good (obviously added from the 80s channel).. Okay so I biased the channel, so what, it's my site.. It was only 56 videos.. If you think I should revert those, contact me at rofthorax@gmail.com . (11/30/09) I fixed it so that chann3lz links will show up in facebook correctly.
